Brubeck Project

For many people, the sound of Dave Brubeck’s ‘Take 5’ is the sound of jazz. This popular American pianist and composer, who died just a few years ago, did more than perhaps anyone to bring jazz into the popular mainstream. Now Devon based musician Neil Maya has put together a group of some of the finest musicians in the South West to authentically reproduce the best known Dave Brubeck recordings such as ‘It’s a Raggy Waltz’, ‘Blue Rondo a la Turk’, ‘Unsquare Dance’ and of course ‘Take 5’.

The band has performed numerous sell-out shows, including appearing at the 2016 and 2017 Teignmouth Jazz Festival, as well as several shows for Devon’s ‘Villages in Action’, Cornwall’s Carn To Cove, Somerset’s Take Art and North Devon’s Beaford Arts. The band released a wonderful new live CD/DVD of the project in June 2017 at a launch event which included a weekend workshop on Dave Brubeck. More recently the band has also toured Herefordshire, Shropshire, Gloucestershire and Dorset.

Depending on venue, the band either plays an entire evening of Dave Brubeck Quartet or a first set of originals and other standards and then a 2nd set of just Brubeck.

What Audience Members and Event Organisers Had to Say About The Brubeck Project

Dear Neil,
I just wanted to thank you all for driving to us and giving us such a special evening.  Without exception, as people left us tonight, they made favourable comments about how much they had enjoyed the evening.
Thank you again

Caroline, Tetbury Goods Shed April 19

The concert was a great success – a lot of closet Brubeck fans were in the audience – and the quality of musicianship was outstanding.  It’s always great to have first class music in a community space and the audience had a great evening.

Alun, chair Winforton Community Association Mar 19

Hi Neil
Just a quick note to say how everybody enjoyed the evening last night. You have a really talented group of musician who deserve the plaudits you receive. Please pass on our thanks to them.
Thanks again for a memorable evening for the Oxenhall community.

Richard, Oxenhall 12th Jan 19

The feedback from the concert you  gave us on the 15th November at our Village Hall has been uniquely positive.  All of you are supremely talented and gave us some memorable moments, not only in the Brubeck classics that everyone expected, but also in your varied and interesting compositions in the first half.  So many people were delighted with ‘The Shed’. We very much hope you will return in due course and delight us again.
With thanks

David Ash, Lamyatt 15th Nov 18

It was great to see our village hall filled to capacity for Neil Maya and his band. The performance was a brilliant combination of classic hits and new pieces.  Everyone went home happy after an entertaining and enjoyable evening of thoroughly professional musicianship.

Neil Maya’s The Brubeck Project, astounds with immaculate and exciting playing by four of the best musicians in the South West  -you would not be short changed if you heard them at Ronnies

Neil, Just wanted to say a big thank you for such a great evening last Thursday. So many people came up to us and said how much they had enjoyed it, as did we. We have never had such a full house!
Regards to you and your band

It was a pleasure to host the Neil Maya Quartet. The event was totally sold out and the audience were delighted with a mixed programme including original compositions from Neil and classics from the Brubeck Project.  The village hall setting leant no special effects to the band, but gimmicks weren’t needed as the focus was on their performance, at times lively, at others sensitive.  The evening rounded off, eventually, when the quartet were allowed to leave after reappearing for a second encore!  They were wonderful.

An excellent gig on Sunday by Neil Maya’s Brubeck Project with all the Brubeck favourite tunes plus many lesser known ones. The gig finished with a great rendering of ‘Blue Rondo a la Turk’ and prolonged applause. A brilliant performance by them all. If you get the chance to see this band, take it!

Plymouth Jazz Club 3rd Sept 17

A great evening and as we all spilled out into the Autumnal night with the jazz beats resonating in our hearts it was hard to believe that this was the town in the country with a city class venue in The Beehive.

Beehive Honiton Devon 15th Sept 17

At last I write to thank you so much for the wonderful concert your quartet gave on November 17th.  Everyone I have spoken to had a great evening and couldn’t speak too highly of the experience. I enclose a comment from one group of three – “We all really enjoyed the concert.  The sound was perfectly balanced, wonderful musicians who all seemed very relaxed and happy performing. What more can I say but ‘Thank you all’.
With best wishes for your future success.

Carole, Chittlehampton for Beaford Arts Nov 2017

A wonderful  event. The Neil Maya Quartet brought a full house to the church on a very chilly February evening, including dedicated jazz fans from far and wide, and no-one left disappointed.
